About University

The Gandhigram Rural Institute (GRI) is a pioneering institution providing higher education to the rural sector. The institute was founded in 1956 following Mahatma Gandhi's revolutionary philosophy of ‘Nai Talim’. Currently GRI is managed by the Ministry of Education, Government of India and is funded through UGC. It has earned the status of ‘Deemed To Be University’ in 1976 and is accredited by NAAC with “A” grade. It is also approved by AICTE. Vision: The institute was set up with a vision to promote casteless and classless society via education, research, and extension. Mission: Its mission is to render knowledge support to the rural sector to make them start in a self-supporting, independent, and autonomous society. Various degrees ranging from Diploma to Doctorate level are provided by the university in its eight schools consisting of eighteen departments and nine centers. The following are the eight schools offering courses in various disciplines operating under GRI. About Campus life
GRI campus is located about 10 kilometers South of Dindigul town and is nestled in between the Sirumalai Hills on its east and Kodai Hills on its west. The campus also has many historic monuments of its own along with the natural beauty and the rich biodiversity. It has developed its own Energy Park housed with all kinds of renewable energy generators. The campus is also well connected by road and trains and a guest house facility is also available for the parents, visitors, and guardians. Apart from the strategic location and serene environment there are many more facilities provided in the GRI campus which is discussed in the below points: Library: GRI Library has been present at the campus since its inception in 1956. The Library covers an area of 14338 square feet. It has a vast collection of 1,75,000+ books, 4,000+ back volumes, 1000+ Ph.D theses, 1600+ CD/VCD collection, 500+ e-books, and more. There is also a Digital Knowledge Centre in the library for e-journal access. Hostel Facility: On campus accommodation in the form of hostels are provided separately for boys, girls and also for working women. The hostels are equipped with facilities like health center, fitness center, gym, etc. Mess facility is available for hostel students providing nutritious vegetarian food at the rate calculated on dividing system. Cooperative stores are also located near to these hostels to cater to the needs of the students. Medical Facilities: Students who want medical assistance are treated in the Kasturba Hospital in Chinnalapatti, Dindigul founded by one of the founders of GRI. Besides it, a full fledged health center is functioning at the campus providing primary level medical services not only to the students and staff but also to the GRI adopted Balwadi villages and the public at large. Other Facilities: Computer Centre, Yoga Centre, Canteen, Laboratory, Wi-Fi, Day Care Centre, Bank, etc.
