About University

Deccan College PostGraduate and Research Institute Pune is the third oldest educational institution in India, and has its existence since two centuries ago. The College was initially started with the name ‘Hindoo College’ by the Bombay Presidency Government and was renamed as the Poona College and later as the Deccan College in October 1864. It is among the few universities in the country specialising on the past and present heritage of the country. The College started functioning as Deemed University from the academic session 1994-95 and is also accredited by NAAC. Vision: The university’s’ vision is to achieve cultural growth, social uniformity, national integration, and future direction through discovery and scientific analysis of worthy information and historical data so as to build an ancient knowledge system. Mission: It aims to create an exceptionally conducive learning environment so that students can be prepared for meaningful personal lives and emerge as responsible citizen globally. The university drives its efforts to prevent and preserve the cultural heritage of the country by providing academic services like consultancy, lectures, scientific analysis of data, exhibitions, etc. There are three full fledged departments at the university providing various courses at PG, Diploma, Certificate, and Doctorate level. About Campus life
The campus of the college was shifted to a new campus sprawling over an area of 115 acres near Yerawada after it was renamed as the Deccan College. The main building is built in a beautiful Gothic style and has all the amenities required for comfortable stay and effective learning. Library: The library of the institute was established to bring people and information together in inventive ways. To spread knowledge the library has a collection of over 1,10,000 books, 35,000+ bound volumes and periodicals, 10,000+ manuscripts, 1,70,000+ maps and atlases, and more. One of the most notable collections of the library is the thumb size Bhagwat Gita known as “Angusthamatra Gita”, a one among the tiniest Bhagwat Gita prints ever made. Besides all this, there are about 11,000+ rare handwritten manuscripts and some palm leaf manuscripts. Hostel: Students coming from outside Pune are provided hostel accommodation separately for boys and girls with a capacity to accommodate over 150 students in all. The hostel rooms are well furnished with common bathrooms, a cot, table, chair, and cupboard in each room, and mess facility is also provided to the hostlers. Sports: The University has a Gymkhana which serves all the amenities to the students for their recreational and cultural activities. Facilities for outdoor and indoor games like Cricket, Volleyball, Badminton, Carom, Chess, Table-Tennis, etc are available at the Gymkhana. Treadmill and body building equipment are also added to it. There is a sports ground too to play outdoor games at the university campus. Museum: The College has A.I.H.C and Archaeology Museum and Maratha History Museum. The motto of the museums is to display cultural remains of the human past and provide knowledge on ancient history, culture, and Archaeology. The Maratha History Museum comprises the important records of the late 18th and early 19th centuries of Maratha History. The historical collection at the museums consists of Manuscripts and palm-leaf works, Paintings, Old Maps and Plans, Macartney Papers, Copper-plate grants, etc. Other Facilities: Museums, Convocation Hall, Canteen, Guest House, Solar Panel.
