About University

Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit was founded in the year 1993 at Kalady, Kerala to provide quality knowledge in Sanskrit language. In due course of time, the university expanded its academic curriculum to provide education in Indian and Foreign languages, Social Sciences, and Fine Arts besides Sanskrit. In 2005, it got ‘State University’ status with the approval of UGC. The university is also accredited by NAAC. Vision: The Vision of the university is to provide education for self actualisation and transformation of the students such that they become critical thinkers with right outlook, understanding, and scientific temperament. Mission: The University aims to achieve its mission of interpreting the historical heritage of India embedded in the Sanskritik traditions to the entire world. It works to bring changes to the society for overcoming the challenges of life. The University runs 26 research programs, 25 post graduate programs, 20 M.Phil programs, 10 undergraduate programs, 9 certificate courses, 2 PG diploma programs, and 1 diploma program. It is the first university in the state to implement an Outcome Based Teaching, Learning and Evaluation (OBTLE) system at the postgraduate level. Several programs run by the university include: B.A, M.A, MSW, BFA, MFA, MP.Ed, M.Phil, Ph.D, and more in different discipline like Sanskrit Sahitya, Music, Vedic Studies, Sanskrit Vedanta, Sanskrit Nyaya, Dance (Bharatanatyam & Mohiniyattam), and more. These courses are run under 10 faculty heads.

About Campus life
The Headquarter and main campus of the university is located at Kalady, 6 kms away from the Cochin International Airport. There are eight regional campuses of the university spread across Kerala at Thrissur, Ettumanoor, Panmana, Koyilandy, Thiruvananthapuram, Payyannur, Tirur, and Thuravoor. The infrastructure of the main campus at Kalady was designed keeping in mind preservation of the natural beauty of the area. There are two academic blocks, a Language Block, Koothambalam Fine Arts Block, and Physical Education and Activity Centre in the university campus. The traditional architecture of Koothambalam is the centre of attraction of the campus. Students are facilitated with various facilities in each block which are discussed briefly in the following points: Library: The Central library in the university is housed in the main campus. The library has developed a collection of learning resources to meet the information requirements of the students. It ensures the functioning of Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Lab. A Web Centre with high speed internet connectivity to boost-up the scholarly activities is housed in the library. There is a manuscript resource centre where rare palm leaf manuscripts are kept safely. The centre has a manuscript library which has collections of manuscripts from centuries ago. Hostel: SSUS Kalady provides safe accommodation to both girl and boy students. There are 3 women’s hostel and 1 men’s hostel to accommodate research scholars, UG, and PG students. Furthermore, a working women’s hostel accommodates teaching and non-teaching staff. In addition to it, Faculty Guest House and Staff Quarters with 3bhk and 2bhk flats accommodates official guests, visitors, and non-teaching staff in the campus. Museum: At the main campus, there is Kanakadhara Museum / Heritage Museum which houses historical and cultural resources and showcases the rich cultural history of Kalady. Sports Facilities: The University has an Activity Centre equipped with courts for Badminton and Tennis and other equipments for various physical exercises. A meditation centre and a gymnasium are also housed in the Activity Centre. Sports and cultural festivals are organised to increase the participation of students in extracurricular activities. Medical Facilities: A Health Centre is operational in the university campus with both Allopathy and Ayurveda doctors, a nurse, and an assistant to provide first aid medical facilities to the entire fraternity. Other Facilities: Open air auditorium, Seminar Halls (7), Bank, Post Office, Art gallery (Lalit Kala Art Gallery), Consumer store, Media Centre, Language Lab, Bird sanctuary, etc.
