Tamil University Thanjavur was established on september 15, 1981, by the Government of Tamil Nadu, under Tamil University Act No.9 of 1982 to boost the advancement of learning and research in Tamil literature and culture and language. Tamil University has been recognised by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi, since June 11, 1985. Tamil University has two affiliated institutions for research programmes: The International Institute of Tamil Studies, Chennai and Pondicherry Institute of Linguistics and Culture, Pondicherry. The university has received a B+ grade from NAAC with a CGPA of 2.52 on a seven-point scale. The Tamil University courses include MA, M.Sc, MBA, M.Phil, and PhD courses. The Tamil University research works spread wide in the field of arts, stage plays, music, painting, culture, sculpture, literature, architecture, grammar, history, linguistics, archaeology, religion, philosophy, epigraphy, geography, ancient sciences, earth science, astronomy, astrology, navigation and shipping, engineering sciences, siddha medicine, and handicrafts based on the rich materials, environment management, waste management, pollution control, mineral resources, groundwater exploration studies, coastal management, disaster management, remote sensing, GIS application for the earth sciences and society. The courses at Tamil University are offered through a number of departments and centres. The Tamil University has also established a Department of Tamil Studies in foreign countries for the research on the Tamil diaspora, language and literature. The centre helps in imparting training to international scholars who want to study the Tamil language and literature. Foreign exchange programmes at Tamil University are also offered with various abroad institutions to understand the Tamil communities' cultural, language, and socio-economic conditions. Tamil University admissions for PhD programmes are done on the basis of TURCET. UGC-NETT, SET, SLET, and JRF are also accepted. The Tamil University admissions are done on the merit basis. The facilities of the Tamil University campus include a separate hostel for men and women, a gym, SC/ST welfare cell, a library, a health centre, etc. Tamil University placement cell looks after the placement procedures in the university. Tamil University placement is held every year and top companies with national and international recognition like TCS, HCL, ITC, Accenture, etc visit the Tamil University campus to recruit students of Tamil University.
