On December 14, 1980, the then-President of India, Shri Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, laid the foundation stone for the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences on the current King George's Medical University site. The Medical Council of India (MCI) has authorised the institute, and the University Grants Commission (UGC) has recognised it.
